Alice in Wonderland with machine guns!

Dragons, B-52 bombers and brothels...

 

In 2011 we will be graced with the imagining of writers Steve Shibuya and Zack Snyder. An action-fantasy film with an all female cast set in the 1950 (Can you say; ‘Pin Up Girls’?) and starring the stunning Emily Browning with her excellent supporting cast of Abbie Cornish, Jena Malone, Vanessa Hugens, and Jamie Chung.

This film, SUCKER PUNCHED, will follow a young girl about to be lobotomized (OUCH) as she attempts to escape an insane asylum with her beautiful inmates. This amazing movie is scheduled to be released in both IMAX and conventional theatres on March 25^th 2011.

The cast had to take fight evaluations and will be demonstrating amazing technique from the stunt coordinator from 300 and Watchmen. The girls training requires them to deadlift 210 pounds for their roles and they will have to master their stunts, training and choreography to create the spectacular performance Snyder demands of his actors.

Snyder tells that when the girls are fighting, "[like] they're on their way to kill a baby dragon, they've killed all of these orc-like creatures and they're entering a door [and] it's this classic, real Navy SEAL style room clearing. They have machine guns but they're fighting mythic creatures, impossible creatures. The hand to hand stuff is all brutal, because Damon [Caro] did all the [fights] in Bourne and it has that vibe to it." In the characters' imaginations, Snyder remarks, "they can do anything."

This movie has been described as ‘Alice in Wonderland with machine guns’ and ‘in the end, it’s about this girl’s survival and what she needs to do to be able to cope.’ –Snyder

SUCKER PUNCH is an epic action fantasy that takes the viewers into the vivid imagination of a Baby-Doll, whose dream world is the ultimate escape from her painful reality. Unrestrained by the boundaries of time and place, she is free, and her incredible adventures blur the lines between the asylum and her fantasy world.

Watch Baby-Doll as she urges the outspoken Rocket, street-smart Blondie, loyal Amber and reluctant Sweet Pea to band together and try to escape their terrible fate!

Little Red at a Masquerade:

 This Halloween I dressed as Little Red Riding Hood, though I wasn’t too traditional. A severed wolves head lay quietly in my basket and I wasn’t heading to Grannies.

Accompanied by the lovely Esmeralda, my friend from College, I ventured to the Renaissance to enjoy my first Masquerade Ball. The music was that of the mid 80’s and early 90’s era and hall was filled with costumes from all different eras. We enjoyed the grace of ballroom gowns from the 1600’s as well as an entertaining Mummy and a masked superhero. The beckoning of the Spice Girls and Michael Jackson had us dancing away the night, and a Candy Bar in the lower hall satisfied our inner children.

Overall the night was successful, and we even dragged along some friends from the local comic book shop to dance away the night with us. We enjoyed music, laughs and slightly degrading jokes all night. I even won myself a free comic book!

Inspired by Zenescope’s launch of Grimm Fairy Tales Myths and Legends I dressed as Little Red who will be premiering in their first few titles. Zenescope has always featured alluring characters to myself and I had a hard time picking between Little Red and the Queen of Hearts. Ultimately I had to go with the character which looked more innocent and who was about to be features in and new Zenescope title.

As some of you may remember I had a vote earlier in October about which costume I should dawn on this festive night and thankfully with my multitude of parties I was still able to satisfy my voters with a salty pirate maiden outfit. I had guns and swords hidden and spent the night plundering booty and pillaging the candy stations.

2010 – The Year of the…Women?

X-treme Rogue

One of Marvel’s many goals for 2010 is to celebrate women of all types; whether heroines, villains, artists, writers or other contributors to the Marvel Universe. Many believe that one of Marvel’s greatest weaknesses is their perception and representation of women in their comic books. I disagree.

In the past when women were required and expected to be stay at home mothers and generally seen and not heard Marvel (as well as many other comic book companies) had female characters. Marvel may not have made every female character positive but they didn’t make every male character positive either. Fictional characters are boring without depth and faults. Marvel did an amazing job in X-men of creating strong relatable female characters along side their popular male characters.

Uncanny X-men

Rouge, arguably one of their stronger members of the team, was extremely popular with the female fans. She was physically strong and had the power to become stronger by stealing the powers or strength from mutants and humans a like. Rouge amazing power was also her greatest weakness; she was unable to have physical contact with anyone while she didn’t posses the control of her powers. Her tragic love story with Gambit captured the hopeless romantic female readers. Thankfully the die-hard fans were rewarded with some Gambit and Rogue action in a few comics like X-treme X-men. (Which after hearing about her new control of her powers in this series I immediately went to my amazing local comic book shop to order)

Stepford Cuckoos

X-men also stars strong characters such as Jean-Gray, Storm, and even some tragically amazing villains such as Mystique and Magneto’s daughter the Scarlett Witch. While looking into each of these characters from the X-men universe as well as many more it is easy to see that Marvel didn’t have a vendetta against women. They had character ideas, plot line ideas and the worked like any creative person would. Their characters are a strategic creation to promote women in a negative way but another character created (whether female or male) to gain a personality, fan base and to help the story to progress.

Pixie

Lately Marvel has heard the cries of under appreciated female fans and is trying to over compensate for perhaps not giving the female characters enough ‘lime-light’ or positive qualities. I am afraid that Marvel may be pushed too far and while trying to appease it’s female viewers it may in fact alienate them more. I am glad the female fans and employees are being recognized and celebrated but I believe there are better ways for Marvel to promote their female characters then in this gimmick. The strong female characters deserve more then to just be used as tools to appease some angry female fans. Some women are not of amazing moral caliber and some are the most sincere imaginable. Emma Frost will forever be of low moral fiber and have enough plastic surgery to look amazing and I wouldn’t want her any other way. On the same thought Rogue is a strong female presence (when written correctly) with great ability to be both sincere and extremely selfish, she may have mutant powers but she still has human emotions.

Rouge will forever be one of my favourite characters because of how REAL she is portrayed in the X-men 90’s animated TV show and many of Marvel’s comics that feature her.

Thank you Marvel for recognizing women, but heed these warning ands be tactful.

My Loyalties Sway

How the Comic Book World entered my Wonderland:

When I was in my teenage years I decided I needed to know more about my favourite character from DC’s Batman The Animated Series. I started with a very generic Google search of my beloved Harley Quinn and found out she had her own comic book series. I was ecstatic and at the nearest FanExpo in Toronto I buckled down and found a comic book distributer to help me start my ever-growing collection. After my initial introduction to comic books I realized that not all comic books are about superheroes and once I found Zenescope’s Grimm Fairy Tales and other spin offs as well as Dark Horses Buffy I was completely hooked on strong female characters in comic books. I read one comic book with Superheros and that is Power Girl, other than that I have Harley Quinn as an anti-hero in Gotham City Sirens and everything connected to Zenescope’s Wonderland and Grimm Fairy Tales.

Recently I decided to look into local comic book publishers and I have found Septagon Studios. Their mission is to publish non-traditional comic books and their focus is on great stories without a ‘superhero’ character. I love the entire idea, I want to read a comic and be enthralled by the story and the ability to relate to the characters. Septagon and Zenescope’s are styles draw me in for very opposite reasons. Septagon has very inspired artwork that is unconventional and very original; they try to spotlight local artists and are located in Toronto. Zenescope on the other hand takes light and fun fairy tales and turns them to a sexy dark art style. I believe that their more eccentric comic issue I’ve read would be their Pinocchio issue for Grimm Fairy Tales.

DC and Marvel may hold the top market share, but they need to look out for upcoming comic books with story-lines that capture their audience; who don’t rely on recognizable characters to bring in their fan base but are creating a new style of comic book.

DC Comics, you will always have my readership because I love Power Girl so much and I truly enjoy reading about my psychotic Hench Wench (Harley Quinn) but with the upcoming competition providing me with stronger female characters, more in-depth and enticing story lines and avant-garde style art I can’t say I will be loyal to you much longer.

A True Disappointment:

The True Blood Finale ultimately made me question whether I would waste my time watching the next season. I have read many comments on others opinions of the finale and come to the conclusions each time. There are too many plot lines.

The scenes no longer flow together; the momentum of the show is lost by moving from one plot to the next. From the intensity of some of Sookie’s scenes with the vampires to the slow crawl of Sam and Tara eating breakfast. It was frustrating for the viewer. I may be interested in Sam’s life and him coming out, but not right after the high interest I had with Sookie’s scene. I found the entire episode choppier then normal and very difficult to follow (not that I didn’t understand, but that it didn’t flow.)

I am very glad that Eric didn’t die and that Bill’s secret was finally found out, Sookie may never date a vampire again and the witches may pose to have an interesting plot for the next season. The episode help potential but the execution was a little off for me, and as I have found, for many viewers. I used to be very proud to call myself a Trubie, I follow the TrueBloodHBO tweets on Twitter and keep as up to date as I can in the True Blood universe. The advertising for the show is true genius and I respect the genre they are pursuing as after Buffy they’ve been lacking in that department.

True Blood, please surprise me with an amazing première episode in June or you’ve lost a loyal fan. I was going to try and be Sookie for Halloween until I watched the finale. Reel me back in and I’m yours.

My task, when the DVDs come out, rewatch the episodes together and see if the flow is different when there is not a weekly gap

Facebook Advertising Can Work

Facebook advertising can work, or it at least got me. So I want to go shopping at this new online store (well new to me) and buy some amazing Geek shirts and maybe even try out to be their new Model.

Am I really that easy? (Don't answer that!) Is it that easy to grab the attention of a 20 year old College student? Well yes and no. Using Facebook advertising really allows you to target and connect with the appropriate audience.

Snorg Tees didn't advertise to my mother, or my teacher, they advertised on the Facebook page of a young college student with interests that include: Batman, Comic Books and Smallville. They knew who they were hitting before I even had a chance.

Now I am targeting, I am hoping that the eyes following this blog are geeks, nerds and fun people who would be interested in Star Wars shirts, Joke sayings and Zombie pictures. If you are interested in geek style shirts to wear under your dress shirt or to wear to your local comic book shop then check out this online store. Halloween Dilemmas!

I have a dilemma my fans, a terrible terrible dilemma! I don't know what to be for Halloween. If I had stuck it out better this summer I could have been Power Girl, but alas it must be put off until next year when I have achieved my six pack and arms work their salt. Harley Quinn and Harleen Quinzel have occupied two years so far and I was American McGee's Alice before Harley. This year I need something new, and I am coming to you for opinions.

Should I be a Sexy Pirate and pillage, plunder and loot?


I'd have to learn some Pirates songs, watch Muppets on Treasure Island and Pirates of the Caribbean and start practicing my Arr!

I'll fight my way to victory and cuddle my way out of defeat! Fuzzy boots and outfit look like I will have a warm night! I will need to find a sword large than me and maybe break out my Harley Quinn Mallet to make this one happen.

Should I be a different type of Harlequin and have a jester of a time?

I get to be a Harlequin Jester and entertain and insult those around me. I will have to be witty that night and keep my guard up. Perhaps I'll even get some practical jokes set up before I go in! While setting my friends up to be the punch line I will have to remain lady like and ready. Sounds like fun!

     The entire shows grips you and takes you for am emotional and action filled ride. Jensen Ackles does an amazing job as the Red Hood and helps unfold a much better version of his resurrection than the comics could ever try to boast. 

    

     For those unfamiliar with how the Red Hood came to be in the comic book world here is a very quick re-cap, “Due to the reality warping effects of Superboy-Prime punching his way in, Jason Todd's corpse was revived in his grave.” Yes that is right, a warping effect from Superboy-Prime! Some more crazy stuff happens in result of Superboy-Prime’s reality warp but that is for another blog.

     I truly enjoyed DC’s movie version of Under The Red Hood and couldn’t have asked for anything different. I am a little sad the Mark Hamill will no longer be voicing the Joker once he has finished with Arkham City this year but John Di Maggio did an amazing job.

     It did take me a few minutes to adjust to his lower and darker voice but once I heard his Joker-esque laugh I was sold. I know he would do the character justice and all thoughout the movie he was disturbingly funny.

     I also truly enjoyed the writing for the movie, Jensen was able to deliver some truly amazing and disturbing lines that made me, morbidly, warm and tingly on the inside.

“You wanna die? There's easier ways to kill yourself.“ in which Red Hood replies “Yeah, like yelling at the guy who's holding the AK-47.”

     I will not ruin the movie for those that have not had the privilige of viewing it yet, but I am willing to discuss this movie more though comments or through Twitter. Please send me any and all comments, questions and opinions.

One episode away from the season finale of True Blood!

Will Eric die?

So many questions and two weeks to wait. True Blood's finale will not be aired next Sunday because of the Labour Day weekend and instead will air the week after.

Will Eric ever steal Sookie away from Bill? Can Sookie forgive Bill after this episode?

I don't think they will be starting over, I think that next season will show a new side to the Sookie/Bill relationship and maybe allow Eric (if he lives) to move in and finally get some Fairy action!

Look at the sexy Viking, he can only get so close to the blood he desires.

How Comic Books Impacted My Life

I became addicted, I spent more money than I probably should, I met new friends at my local comic book shop, I went to conventions, wore some interesting costumes; but most of all ->

I have decided to become a Superhero! I'm not going to be a vigilantly or do anything dangerous or illegal but I am going to make myself the best I can be.

After reading a startling amount of Power Girl comic books and seeing her physic, as well as many other Super Heroines, I have decided that I can look like a Super Hero too!

I am going to run, weight lift, eat right and become the best looking, hottest, strongest, healthiest Hottest Geekette possible.

Every Chick has her weakness!

Weaknesses, every chick from real life to comic books has a weakness. For some it’s purses or makeup and for Powergirl its a little green meteor rock and for Harley Quinn it’s her unyielding love/obsession for The Joker.

What is my weakness you may ask? Well it is simple and it is complicated and I will answer first with; Shoes! I am still a chick, though a very untraditional chick. Now I will NOT go out and spend hundreds of dollars on shoes in fact I’m not sure if I have EVER spend more than approx $80 on a very nice pair of fancy shoes. I try to keep my impulsive purchases to a minimum and I weigh price versus use in my head many times before I hit the ‘buy’ button.

I have just over 20 pairs of shoes for presentations, working out, general use and some costume pieces (come on, I cosplay). Now I want to add a few more shoes to my collection that I have just seen advertised in my Zatana and Powergirl comics this month. I want Superhero shoes! I mean, I know I won’t ever find a Powergirl or Harley Quinn shoe, I’m just not that lucky and they are not that popular but Converse and DC have joined forces to create an amazing line of Converse shoes.

Including Batman; Superman and Green Lantern, DC is using the most popular and most recent heroes to hit the spot light this year and I truly hope they are able to expand their line in the future to create shoes with Villains and less popular characters as they introduce them in Smallville and in their animated movies.  I may have a budget and I may be one of the most reasonable out of my species(gender) but I can tell you that if I find a pair of Batman or Superman Cons that fit my petite feet I will be snatching them up whether it requires a credit card or not.

Now that you know my weakness, I shudder to think how many will use it against me. This is The Hottest-Geekette signing out!

Friends Don't Let Friends Drink Friends.

As an advertising student I was bound to have an advertising entry eventually, lately I have been a little Fang Obsessed with the season premiere of True Blood Season 3, and I have been looking into what helped this season reach the outstanding numbers that it did.

In an interview with Tongela Johnson, True Blood discussed their marketing plan; “Instead of a traditional marketing plan, True Blood creates an “in world” perspective. This is done through a wide array of social media, digital, and traditional advertising techniques”.

After watching the bonus disc for Season 2, I noticed their wide array of Fellowship of the Sun commercials and that they all had web addresses. I decided to take a look and not only did HBO create a site for The Fellowship of the Sun (http://fellowshipofthesun.org) and the American Vampire League (http://www.americanvampireleague.com/) but they also have their very first website http://trubeverage.com// for the sales of the TruBlood beverage created to help promote the show.

TruBlood is a carbonated drink, flavoured to be Blood Orange and displayed to be a blood type. The beverage has its own small marketing campaign that promotes itself as well as the drinks for some very eccentric Fang Sympathizers.

After the drink was created to promote the first season, the advertisers for HBO’s True Blood had to step it up with online viral advertising as well as some shocking Outdoor ads. I have discovered a vampire blog that I have just started following called Blood Copy (http://www.bloodcopy.com) as well as a Human/Vampire dating site (http://lovebitten.net/). 

True Blood’s advertisers had a challenge this year with Season 3’s premiere and their need to top their previous advertising campaigns, their website states;

“We created and executed a campaign to disrupt reality and people’s perceptions of what an advertisement really is”.

If you haven’t noticed some slightly bizarre ads this year, take another look at Monster.com Billboards, as well as Harley Davidson.

Digital Kitchen says:

“When we started we were hopeful to get 2-3 brands to sign on, however in a matter of weeks we were able to secure six brands: Geico, Monster, Mini, Harley-Davidson, Gillette, and Mark Ecko”.

Their campaign proved to be exceptionally successful.

My Joss Whedon Following

It started with a wonderfully cheesy show called Buffy the Vampire Slayer, then it also encompassed it’s spin off of Angel and then again expanded to encompass some space pirates on Serenity and it’s forgotten season of Firefly.

Now that I have grown to love the characters that Joss has created I have also fallen for the actors. I watched Sweeney Todd just to see Giles’ (Anthony Stewart Head’s) 5 seconds of screen time. I also grew very fond of David Boreanez in Bones and have recently started watching Castle.

I am now on the second season and have fallen in love with Nathan Fillion’s character, Rick Castle. In a recent episode, the Halloween one to be exact Castle came out in his Mal uniform from Firefly and when his daughter asked who he was supposed to be he replied “I’m a space cowboy!”

It was so exciting for the Joss fan in me. After hating Nathan from his Buffy days as a Preacher who wanted to kill all the potentials I followed him to Dr. Horrible and became infatuated with his acting. Now I love him as Castle and he’s become as recognized to me as Giles (Repo! Genetic Opera), Willow ( How I Met Your Mother), and many other wonderful Buffy and Angel cast that I really miss and enjoy.

Thank you Joss for all the wonderful shows you have created and for the characters that you helped reach the spot light.

As of now on my Joss obsession I loved his Glee episode and am trying to keep up with his Dark Horse and IDW Publishing comic books.

Wicked!

In November I am taking one of my best friends to go see Wicked in Toronto. It isn’t the original cast, which is sad but it is still going to be exciting. The tickets are my birthday present to her. I really hope she enjoys it!

With my school in Highschool I went to see Phantom of the Opera and Dirty Dancing in Toronto and this will be the third that I remember. I think my mom took me to see Beauty and The Beast when I was much younger and I have been in and watched local plays that really made me appreciate the theatre more than I thought I could.

Idina Menzel and Kristen Chenoweth are amazing singers that brought a vibrant light to the Wicked Musical. I wish that I could see them perform in person it would truly make a few dreams come true. I know that they won’t go back to the play, they have moved on but I also wish, hope, dream that the actresses are considered for the Musical Movie that I hope actually happens.

The story makes me happy, the music is memorable and catchy and I love the entire idea of how she became evil and how she isn’t the same witch we pictured after the lies from The Wizard of Oz. I will blog about this again after we go to see the play. It promises to be amazing and after watching Idina and Kristen in GLEE I am even more excited to see this wonderful play.

My Comic Book Land!

 

So, as you all probably know, I have recently moved to Kingston. I have finished unpacking, blogged a bit and have been working a ton. Now I believe it is time to talk about my get away.

Every Wednesday new comic books come in but does that keep me from going multiple times a week, no. I believe this previous week I made 3 separate purchases from this comic book store.

My Comic Book Guy, who may not love his title in this blog,  always has a comic book or trade set aside for me and is great at ordering my comic books as soon as possible.

The atmosphere at this comic book store is amazing. When I first started to enjoy comic books and tried to go in and purchase a few I felt very out of place. It was nerve-wracking being the only female in a store where everyone seemed to know each other the regulars didn’t even give her a second glance.

I almost didn’t want to return to that comic book store, or any that were located in my hometown. I feared that I had started my comic book adventure a little too late. When I was young I only lived with my mom and was never truly exposed to comic books. In mid high-school Buffy was released, as a comic book and I wanted to read it. I went, with my friend, to the local comic book shop and bought nothing. She was a little less nervous and eventually ordered some comic books and we went home. I was very afraid to look in the wrong spot, ask the wrong question or purchase the wrong issue. Instead I went to my local Chapters, and read a few pages of Buffy while I waiting for my roommate to acquire enough of the series for me to start borrowing the Buffy comics.

After a few years of only reading borrowed comics I knew I needed some of my own. My roommate and I went to CNA FanExpo with a few of our friends and I picked up a few Harley Quinn comic books from her short run on her own. After reading a few and realizing how much of the series I was missing I knew I had to overcome my fear and go to a comic book shop.

At this point I was dating my boyfriend and went with him. I still felt very out of place and he normally asked for my comic books and I just looked through the back issues until we left and I wasn’t a very happy comic book fan. I enjoyed what I had and was still too nervous to try new titles until I moved to Kingston. Now I go to Action Packed Comics with my wonderful Comic Book Guy who has comics for me behind the counter and is always willing to strike up a conversation with me.

The layout of the store is very simple for new comers to understand and everyone there is extremely friendly and always willing to help you find a trade or back issue. They have Yu-Gi-Oh and Magic Card tournaments there and always have something in stock that I really want to buy. I purchase ALL of my Zenescope’s Grimm Fairy Tales from Action Packed Comics and have started a few series through them. They are also trying to expand my horizon with X23 in the Marvel Universe. I will not abandon my DC love but I am willing to try something new.

The Gateway Drug

 

So I was at my local comic book shop, which I am growing rather fond of, and my Comic Book Guy has decided I need to read Marvel. Technically I already am reading Marvel because of Anita Blake but I believe he meant ‘real’ or ‘classic’ Marvel. He is a Spiderman fan I believe and gave me a nice deal to try and persuade me into purchasing a Marvel trade.

I now own X23’s comic books and will find out soon is Marvel is for me. I assume I will like her as I grew very fond of her when I was reading Pixie Strike’s Back. I also own the animated series of X-men and a few Marvel movies so I can’t say I hate Marvel or I have never experienced it, I just have a soft emotional spot for my DC characters such as Power Girl with her magnificent boobs and Harley Quinn with her innocent and naive personality and her abusive relationship.

In the Marvel Universe I do have favourites, I love Rogue, always have and always will. I even named my pet after Rogue, I also really enjoy Mystique and have now realized I have a strong attachment to Pixie.  I also really enjoy Wolverine/Logan, but I have to give more love to my female characters, as it only seems right.

Slowly but surely I am looking beyond the X-men universe at Marvel and I am really enjoying Iron Man, Hulk and Thor and am very excited for the movies to be made and to see the Avengers but I would be even more excited if DC was able to pull together a J.S.A. movie. I know they have the ability to create something great after watching Smallville and truly hope that are able to seize the opportunity and give their fans what they have been waiting for. Make a Batman Superman movie (I know it’ll never happen but I can hope) with Smallville actors for the Superman cast and then move forward to create either a J.S.A. television show that truly has potential or a movie that could be remarkable if done right.

 

Wow, I start this blog trying to talk about my Comic Book Guy and his Gateway Drug (X23) to Marvel and I go on a DC desire rant. I suppose I will always be a DC fan, and I will try to expand my love for all comic books.

DC and Zenescope truly have a large place in my heart but I also truly love DarkHorse, Marvel and many other companies that produce amazing stories in comic book form.

Tragic news for all of the Harley Quinn lovers and Joker enthusiast, and fans of all shapes and sizes. The legend is going to retire. After the next Arkham Asylum game the beloved Mark Hamill will have his ‘last hurrah’ as the iconic Joker.

Mark Hamill you will be missed.  You are loved and were truly delightful as the dangerous and memorable Clown Prince of Crime. You made the Joker who he is today. You and Paul Dini are the real reasons that The Joker is so iconic today, as your laugh, your voice and, of course, the terrible jokes you pulled were a turning point for the comic book world.

The Joker evolved in every episode and medium. Beginning his appearances as The Clown Prince of Crime, in which he became famous for his burglaries with a laugh, before evolving into a true Crime Lord with Henchmen and his beloved, though abused, Hench Wench.  Eventually the Joker would become the truly maniacal murderer so many know him as today, a villain who was truly insane and had no boundaries, only jokes.

I thank you, Mark Hamill, Kevin Conroy, Arleen Sorkin and Paul Dini for creating the Bat-verse in the animated series that would stick with me for my entire life. I want to thank you for your reunion on the first Batman: Arkham Asylum game and for returning for your “last hurrah” on the second game.

As a Harley Quinn fan and cosplayer I will weep for the end of the Joker, for the loss of his amazing laugh and the voice that inspired or scared us all.
